Yeh I added in some clarification at the bottom because someone pointed this out on twitter. I am mostly arguing for a tax on the added sugar in soft drinks; a global tax on sugar is impractical and unnecessary, but there is excellent evidence that reducing the amount of sugar that people consume from soda reduces their risk of death.

There are other “sugar taxes” that are likely a good idea — breakfast cereals spring to mind as a likely candidate — but soft drinks are a very low hanging fruit when it comes to health.
