The youngest victim was just five years’ old.
And these are just preliminary numbers.
One month in the US has seen more fatal shootings that in the last 20 years across most of the rest of the world combined. Taking the last two decades of Australian and British mass shootings and you’ve got a few days of violence in the US.
There is nothing special about America. More guns, combined with lax gun control, leads to more shootings.
It’s not about one specific policy. It’s not about mass buybacks. It’s about looking at the whole system of gun control and realizing that other countries have had this problem, and have changed.
There is nothing special about America. Each of these deaths could have been prevented. Simple, easily acceptable gun control laws that are usually supported by the majority of the population — as long as they are framed as “sensible gun control” and not as “taking away your guns” — could stop this epidemic of murderous death in its tracks.
By ignoring basic, commonsense gun control, you guarantee that this will happen again. The stories of mass shooters who could’ve been stopped if only background checks were done properly, if only they didn’t have such easy access to firearms, if only, if only, if only until the country is screaming with the voices of people desperate to be heard. This could’ve been stopped. These people didn’t have to die.
Thoughts and prayers are the useless whisperings of the morally bankrupt. The wasted syllables of those with every intention of letting this happen again.
Don’t let them get away with it.
