There’s this weird myth that is bandied about by a lot of people that we have gotten less healthy in recent years due to chronic diseases coming to the fore. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Despite the rise in things such as diabetes, cancer and the like, we are living longer every year. Our health right now is better than it ever has been, despite the increased consumption of sugar and grains, nicely demonstrated by the graph below:
Also worth noting that we don’t eat any more chemicals than we used to. As Tim Minchin puts it: “EVERYTHING is chemicals.” Everything. A chemical is something made up of atoms, and we eat precisely the same number of things made up of atoms that we always have.
