It’s the holiday season, and we’re all making merry. If you’re anything like me, the weeks around the end of the year are filled with more food, booze, and cheer (read — eggnog) than any other time of the preceding 12 months. It’s a time filled with joy, but also the unfortunate extra calories that we’ve all spent quite a bit of time avoiding.

And, of course, this plenty comes with its own burden. After splashing out on ourselves, everyone’s looking for the best way to come down from such a frivolity-filled high. As the year comes to and end, hundreds of stories are popping up online recommending ways to detox from all of the fun you’ve been having over the last few weeks.

Being an epidemiologist, I’ve come across many of these claims in the past, and I’ve looked into quite a few purported detoxes myself. Rather than go over a whole list of things that don’t really make sense, I thought the best thing for you all would be to simply tell you the best thing to do to make your post-holiday recovery as smooth as possible.
