Omega 3 Supplements Probably Don’t Slow Aging

Despite the breathy headlines, new findings about Omega 3 oils are very uninspiring.

Omega-3 supplements have been a contentious issue for decades. The global market for omega-3 supplements — which are mostly some form of fish oil — is reportedly in the billions and set to grow enormously in the coming years. If you believe the marketing of these supplements, they help with everything from brain to heart health and can improve your wellbeing in myriad ways.

Scientifically, however, there’s not much data showing that they work. Or rather, the available scientific evidence — which includes gold standard randomized trials — seems to show that for the majority of conditions omega 3 supplements probably do little or nothing.

Recently, headlines have contradicted this evidence. Media from around the world is reporting that omega-3 supplements can make slow down aging and make you live longer.

Sadly, while this news is probably very encouraging for supplement salesmen, the data paints a very different story. There’s no reason to believe that omega-3 supplements can slow aging.
