Look, I’m not going to sit here and defend US politicians. The idiots trying to push “assault weapons bans” are just as bad as those who argue that more guns will decrease the number of firearm homicides/deaths in the face of all available evidence.
That being said, the absolutist “repeal the 2nd or nothing” position is clearly a false dichotomy. Many states have effectively instituted measures to control firearm deaths without contravening constitutional law. I’m not a constitutional lawyer, but there have been assessments of many of these laws and — if correctly written and enacted — they would pass muster in the US legal system.
All or nothing is a nonsense statement. Harm reduction is the real goal, and there’s very clear evidence from around the world that it’s achievable when it comes to guns.
