Children die. Stop treating it like it’s all about ‘freedom’

A single year of carnage in schools in the US. Another day, another death.

These are figures. Statistics. We can count up the children who have been slaughtered beneath guns in the last 12 months, totting up their tragic, awful murders in neat columns and figures. We can tell each other that the gunmen (they are almost always men) were sick, deluded, possessed by the devil.

We can talk about everything, other than the obvious truth.

Guns are a public health issue.

Gun legislation is the key to preventing future tragedies.

Every country in the world aside from the US knows this.

Next week, next month, next year, sooner or later there will be another dozen child-sized body bags lined up outside a school. There will be another argument about how important it is that we all be ‘free’.

This is just factually incorrect

Free to be shot. Free to be killed. Free to fear the gunman walking into school one day with a rifle.

I wonder if the parents of the dead think that the freedom to carry is as important as their children’s lives?

I suspect not.
