Bone Broth Is Just Alliterative Stock

Why you probably don’t need to spend extra cash on bone broth.

One of the most popular current health fads is bone broth. You can get it in almost every supermarket or health foods store, and you hear about it with remarkable regularity. It’s hard to go a week without someone mentioning that bone broth is a great idea for whatever health problems are currently plaguing you or your family.

Which is all very odd, because bone broth itself is just…stock. Humans have been making bone broth for generations, because it’s a great way of adding flavour to a soup or stew. You boil animal bones in water for a while, usually with some vegetable scraps and salt, then strain the fluid and bang! Flavourtown.

So how did simple stock go from a useful flavour enhancer to one of the most talked-about supplements in the wellness aisle? Well, a lot of it comes down to some very uncertain science and unearned hype about collagen.
