Actually the article was referring to diet soft drinks, not sugary ones.
The idea that sugar is addictive is also pretty contentious, it’s something that a small group of researchers have been trying to sell for a while but it’s not actually based on great evidence. There’s literally no difference between the sugar in an apple and in a chocolate bar, except for the wrapping.
Obviously fruit is better than chocolate, but demonising sugar as this evil fiend beyond imagining is not really based on sound evidence.
As ever, best advice is to “eat food, not too much, mostly plants”.
